In addition to my commitment to finding the best homes possible for my clients, I volunteer my free time helping dogs at a local animal shelter find the best homes possible as well. I am passionate about people and pets loving where they live. Below is my tribute to the dogs of Portland who make me smile whenever I see them out and about town. Whether you are looking to add to your family or simply looking to provide your existing dog(s) with the best that Portland has to offer, the following list is compiled with love for Portland’s K-9 residents. Got any additions you think I should add? I would love to hear about them.

Do-it-Yourself Dog Wash

Dog Groomers
Note that I recommend the below companies because each has helped out in one way or another with dogs from Multnomah County Animal Services who were so matted and neglected for so long.
- Ultimate Dog Grooming (Mobile Truck – they just need a place to park and an electrical outlet)
- Portland Pampered Pet (Portland, OR)
Drop-by Pet Sitters/Dog Walkers
I have no doubt that there are excellent dog walkers or in-home pet sitters located throughout the Portland metro area. Because representatives of these businesses will enter your home, presumably when you are not there, I take that level of trust so seriously that I am only comfortable recommending companies with whom I have personal experience.
- Rainy Day Pet Sitting (servicing Southeast and Northeast Portland)
- Bark Meow (servicing Southeast, Northeast, and North Portland)
Dog Training
- Ain’t Misbehaving (Portland, OR). Camilla is the best trainer I have ever worked with. We have used her services for private training lessons with three dogs plus countless foster dogs. We also attend K-9 Nose Work sessions with her and our dog Riley, the wonder-mutt.
Veterinarians
- Southeast: Mt. Tabor Veterinary Care
- Northeast: Laurelhurst Veterinary Hospital
- North Portland: North Portland Veterinary Hospital
- Northwest: Pearl Animal Hospital
- Southwest: Forest Heights Veterinary Clinic
- Mobile Vet: At Home Veterinary Services (They come to you! And they service much of the Portland Metro area)
Veterinary Specialists
- Allergies: Animal Allergy and Ear Clinic (Beaverton, OR)
- Holistic Care: Hawthorne Veterinary Clinic (Portland, OR)
- Compounding Pharmacy: Northwest Compounders (Tualatin, OR) (Just try getting some of these foul-tasting medications into your stubborn pet who already feels lousy. Let this compounding pharmacy help you out!)
24-Hour Emergency Veterinary Care
- Dove Lewis (Portland, OR). They also take in injured stray animals if you find an injured animal (domestic or wild).
- VCA Northwest Veterinary Specialists (Clackamas, OR). Worth the drive!
- Emergency Veterinary Clinic of Tualatin. Note that this clinic is also a great place to bring parrots.
Shelters
Open Shelters – these shelters are required by law to take in the lost, stray, injured, and homeless animals that are found in their respective counties. I encourage supporting open shelters as much as possible. What they offer to our community is the most valuable of resources for our stray and neglected animal population.
- Multnomah County Animal Services
- Clackamas County Dog Services
- Bonnie L. Hayes Animal Shelter (Washington County)
- Humane Society for Southwest Washington (Vancouver, WA)
Read about the tremendous save rate that our local open shelters achieved in 2014.
Private Rescue – As important as it is to support open shelters, there is no denying that private organizations can ease the burden on open shelters by accepting owner-surrendered animals and by accepting animals from over-burdened open shelters. We’re all in this for the benefit of the animals. Below are some of my favorite private groups.
- Animal Aid, Inc. (Portland, OR)
- Born Again Pit Bull Rescue (Portland, OR)
- Family Dogs New Life (Milwaukie, OR)
- My Way Home Dog Rescue (Sandy, OR)
- Oregon Dog Rescue (Tualatin, OR)
- Oregon Humane Society (Portland, OR)
Dog Parks
- Here is the definitive list from the Portland Parks & Rec site.
- 1,000 Acres – It’s just outside Portland, but it’s an amazingly large area dedicated to off-leash dog activities.
Doggie Daycare
- Southeast: The Howliday Inn
- Northeast: No Bonz About It
- Northwest: Lexi Dog in the Pearl
- Southwest: Lexi Dog on MacAdam
Dog Boarding
- Hillsboro, OR: Laurel Acre Kennels – They treat your dog like royalty. No question they are worth the drive.
- Northwest Portland: Sniff a Dog Hotel
- Southeast: The Howliday Inn
- Southwest: Lexi Dog on MacAdam
Where to Eat with your Dog
- Tin Shed Garden Cafe (Northeast Portland)
- Lucky Lab Brew Pub (multiple locations)
- A La Carts Food Pavilion (Southeast Portland)
Other Resources
- Be sure to check out the annual “Best of” lists compiled by Spot Magazine!
- Fences for Fido. I feel this list is not complete without mentioning this truly amazing group that works tirelessly to improve the lives of dogs chained up and living outside. They build a free, fenced yard, provide an insulated dog house, and provide access to spay/neuter services. They build 8 to 10 fences a month, have a constant wait list, and are always looking for volunteers.
